Case Study 3
Case 3
Both Fred’s family and the business have rebounded from their prior issues. Jane sought counseling for her gambling issues and has worked hard to mend her relationships with the family. Prior to cashing the forged checks from Jane, Don was struck by lightning and experienced a spiritual enlightenment. He willingly returned the checks to Fred and Sally and promptly joined the Peace Corps. Likewise, when the church found out the donated check was a forgery, it was immediately returned. Bob’s wife (also Sally’s best friend) found out about Bob’s online sabotage and promptly remedied the situation. Once Fred’s Miracle Cough Syrup was back on track, the company’s growth was exponential. Featured on a widely viewed talk show starring a prominent doctor, online orders and demands from big-box chains nationwide skyrocketed. Fred and Sally have been told that now would be an ideal time to take Fred’s Miracle Cough Syrup public. The only distressing issue at hand involves Tammy, a local girl who had been working as a delivery girl for the company. She applied for Jane’s former job as bookkeeper. Fred and Sally hired Ted, an experienced accountant, instead, and Tammy has filed a claim of sex discrimination against the company and Fred personally. Fred and Sally are seeking your advice regarding Tammy and the possibility of taking the company public.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Evaluate three current or potential legal and/or regulatory issues apparent in this fact pattern that might impact a public offering.
II. Determine whether Fred's Miracle Cough Syrup is in compliance with government regulations involving public offerings by analyzing relevant laws and using the appropriate legal test and facts given.
III. Support your conclusions and provide recommendations to improve compliance and strategies for corporate growth.

Project Two: Analysis of Social Institution of Family
You have writing assignments or projects throughout the course. The due dates for each project are noted in your syllabus. Please look at the project rubric and postings associated with the project for more information.
Each project should be in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with 1 inch margins throughout. Each project must be between 600-650 words. (Don't exceed this limit by more than 100 words).
Use MLA format on all projects unless noted. These means that when citing in text use the MLA guidelines and include a work cited list. Also, include a header with your name, course name and number, date, and project name located in the top left corner of the first page of your paper. I strongly suggest visiting the Writing Lab (G-06) to make an appointment for any questions about the structure, grammar, or focus of your projects.
Project Two: Cultural Analysis of Social Institutions: This project focuses on the social institution of the family. It will help students to understand the “family” and how it is portrayed through current forms of media
Choose some form of media that depicts the family and use theories and ideas from the readings and lectures in this class to analyze it. The media can be TV, online video, song, book, podcast, movie, etc. IT SHOULD NOT BE OLDER THAN 2 YEARS, premiere date. Your paper should include the following sections:
Intro: Briefly describe the form of media you chose and story the author is telling-- Tell me how the family is being portrayed here.
Body paragraph: Describe in more detail the depiction of the family and how the family is portrayed and some any events described in the media that affect the family.
Body paragraph: You can choose one aspect of how the family is portrayed and connect it back to class (i.e. structure, form, creation, etc).
Body paragraph: Connect back to class and the lecture. What is this form of media saying about family and how is this different (or not) from what we talked about in class? Does this media give an “accurate” portrayal of the family?
Conclusion: Tie everything together and make conclusions about what this media is saying on family based on what you learned in class.
THE PROJECT Welcome to Anytown, U.S.A., an average American city in most respects that, on the surface, appears to be a great place to live and to raise a family. The city has a diverse racial and economic makeup. The city’s population is composed of African Americans, Caucasians, and Latinos. The affluent sections of the city experience relatively low crime rates, and the middle and low income sections have seen a rise in crime and a growing distrust for the police. The police department has never used a community policing approach. Following the lead of Frazier and the general community policing philosophy, as an officer of Anytown Police Department, you have been tasked with preparing a community policing policy for your department. Create a six- to eight-page policy document (for presentation to command staff) that contains the elements listed in the following sections.
Project Objectives
Your document should address ways in which police and citizens work together to accomplish Arrests of offenders n Crime prevention in the neighborhoods Improvement of the overall quality of life in the community or city Additionally, your policy should address the following questions: Based on your research, what kind of training will the police officers of your department need to attend in order to become proficient in community policing? What should be the focus of these training sessions? Would training be provided for the community residents? Why? Provide appropriate reasons for this decision. How would the policy address the protection needs and fear of crime among specific groups such as juveniles, the elderly, minorities, the disabled, or the poor and the homeless? Finally, based on your research, how would the success or failure of this policy be determined? How would the policy be evaluated and by whom? As you write, be sure to incorporate and properly reference the sources of information obtained through your research and used in your paper. To cite your sources, please follow this procedure: 1. Use in-text citations to indicate the use of information from outside sources. Include the author’s name (or creator if it is an organization or group), date and the relevant page or paragraph (if it is a web page) number(s) in parentheses. Here’s an example: Human beings have been described as “symbol-using animals” (Burke, 2018, p.3). 2. Course Text: Public Health Law: Power, Duty, Restraint by Gostin (2008)
Chapter 7, "Global Health Law"
This chapter explores public health law on a global scale. It identifies the major intergovernmental organizations working on global health issues. It also examines how decisions are made to determine international public health emergencies with the global spread of disease.
International organizations—both governmental and nongovernmental—have focused on protecting and improving the health of our global society, often by targeting social and economic conditions rather than simply specific diseases.
Choose one of the organizations listed in "Table 7: Major Intergovernmental Organizations Working on Health" (pp. 231-232) or "Table 8: Major Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) Working on Health" (p. 233). Research this organization to find out about its various initiatives. Focus on at least one of its initiatives and examine how this organization impacts global health. Are the efforts of this group effective? How could it be more effective? In what ways are the group’s activities interdependent with that of other public health-related organizations?
In 250-350 words respond to the following concerning your selected organization:
•How has this organization impacted global health? Summarize at least one of the major initiatives.
•In what ways are the efforts of this group interdependent with those of other public health-related organizations?
•Explain whether this organization is reaching its stated mission.
