SOC 101 Online Assignment I
“From Common Sense and Personal Problems
to Sociological Investigation of Social Issues”
In 2008 Jake was looking for a job. He felt so discouraged and depressed because his wife was working two part-time jobs and they had fallen behind in all of their household expenses. On several occasions his family ate at soup kitchens and took advantage of food share programs. Jake had been on his previous job for 10 years before his company downed sized and eliminated his department. He felt desperate and alone. One afternoon while he was “job searching “on the net he read an article about the recession the economy was experiencing. When Jake discovered what was going on in the larger society and that his inability to get a job could be affected by the recession ----it helped him to release some of the pressure and guilt he was experiencing in his job search. Jake began to pay more attention to politics and governmental efforts to address unemployment.
In sociology, social structures are patterned social practices in society that are both emergent and penetrating on the actions of the individuals. The sociological imagination examines a person’s biography (personal experiences) and attempts to identify structural aspects (which C.W. Mills refers to the history) of society that could possibly be influencing the individual’s biography.
Sociological imagination applied to Jake’s situation:
a. Biography: could not find a job
b. History/structure “Recession of early 2000s” and “high rate of employment”
This assignment is assuming that you have completed the assigned tasks in the first week’s folder. This assignment is allowing you the opportunity to apply the sociological imagination. The examples must be a life circumstance that you can identify the “biography and history” in the circumstance. It can be personal experience or a fictive one. I tend to replace the term history with structure because in essence that is what Mills was referring to—and most sociologists study “the roles and impact social structures play in people’s lives.”
