BIO 110 Semester Project Guidelines Scientific issues and arguments are in the news every day. Without examining the research being published, one might get the impression that there is constant disagreement over what is actually happening, and what, if anything we should do about it. Many opinions many exist, but opinions may have little basis in reality; they are often based upon a person’s preconceived notions and convictions about a claim, rather than real evidence to support that claim. For this project, you will choose a scientific question and conduct a literature search to find scientific evidence to answer that question. Once you have chosen a question, your goal is to identify at least one peer-reviewed, scientific journal article that presents evidence related to your question. Then you will create a PowerPoint presentation to describe that scientific question and demonstrate your understanding of the evidence for and against your answer to that question. Within the PowerPoint, students will submit a written summary of the peer-reviewed article used in the project. Requirements: I. You will choose a research topic of your own interests (see suggestions on page 2 of this document) and submit a proposal for approval. This proposal will be a simple statement identifying the question or problem you would like to research. Your Semester Project proposal is due during Module 2; see the course calendar for details. Your proposal must be approved by your instructor; if it is not approved, your instructor will provide feedback to help you submit an acceptable proposal. If you do not get approval, you will receive a "0" for the project. II. Your final power point presentation submission must include the following: 1. A minimum of 10 slides. 2. An Abstract on slide #2 that meets the Abstract Guidelines (see III below). 3. The research question from your proposal. 4. A statement that identifies the claim (answer) that was supported by the evidence in your scientific article and by other sources. For example, “Light beer is better for you than regular beer”. 5. A description the evidence supporting your claim. i. Use examples, applications, and observations from your research - do not list facts. ii. Explain why the evidence is important or relevant. iii. You must include multiple sources to support your argument; at least one source must be a peer-reviewed journal article. 6. A statement that identifies a claim that is refuted by the evidence in your scientific article and by other sources. For example, “Regular beer is better for you than light beer”. 7. An explanation of why the claim being refuted is inaccurate. 8. A works cited page on your last slide of the presentation in APA format. III. You will write a 500-word abstract for the peer-reviewed journal article from your sources, in paragraph form (not a list). Your abstract should summarize the journal article and its findings, should be located on slide #2 of your PowerPoint, and should include the following: 1. Title of article 2. Author 3. Source 4. Date of publication (Summarize #1-4 in one paragraph.) 5. Summary (Summarize the article in up to three paragraphs.) 6. Analysis (Analyze the article in two paragraphs or less. Is the biology clearly explained? Has the author made a justifiable interpretation of the data?) The completed PowerPoint (with Abstract) is due during Module 5; see the Course Calendar for details. Examples of Scientific Questions:
1. Are foods labeled “organic” healthier for you than other foods?
2. Is light beer better for you than regular beers?
3. Are diet sodas better for you than regular sodas?
4. Are genetically modified organisms (GMOs) safe for consumption?
5. Will talking to plants make them grow faster?
6. Can all types of vegetables be planted next to each other in a successful garden?
7. Are genetic disorders more likely to be inherited from one parent than from the other parent?
8. Is one blood type more advantageous than the others? 9. If humans keep fishing, will the fish supply eventually run out?
10. Does Earth have a carrying capacity for the human population?
11. Will North Carolina be covered by the ocean if sea level rises?
